MOMS’ Latest Triumph: 101 Healthy Newborns

TWTC’s MOMS Program is a residential treatment option offered to pregnant women in Cook County Jail. The goal is to provide expectant mothers with prenatal care and substance abuse treatment prior to delivery, to increase the likelihood of a healthy newborn. The program, funded by the Cook County Dept. of Corrections, is in its fourth year.

Chandra arrived at TWTC four days into her jail sentence. Two days later, her 11-month old son joined her -- and not a moment too soon. She was able to share his first birthday and witness him taking his first steps. Not only did Chandra receive much-needed pre-natal care for Tristan, she says, “Having both children with me in treatment reminds me what’s at stake.”

Jennifer says she didn’t get arrested, she got rescued -- and, she’s grateful. Without TWTC, she says, “Christopher Michael would have been born malnutrioned and drug positive.” Instead, he was a healthy, eight-pound newborn; and she’s been able to breastfeed him to his current 12-pound weight. Jennifer has three other children between the ages of four and ten.

Francine says “When I walked through these doors, I instantly had the urge to change.” Without TWTC, she says, Kyia would definitely have been a heroin baby. Francine says she created new goals while at TWTC. She is now focused on strengthening her marriage and caring for her other four children. Her new ambition is to become an oncology nurse.
